Australian Diamonds coach Stacey Marimkovich announced her latest squad as she tries to claw back lost titles over the past few years.
Australia is without the Constellation Cup, World Cup and a gold medal at the latest Commonwealth Games – a place the Diamonds have not often been in.
Coach Marinkovich spoke to the media on Monday, to talk about her latest squad and said it was about allowing players the chance to prepare after the chaotic year Australian netball faced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A large squad was picked and Coach Marinkovich said mental fatigue was a big consideration.
“It is in front of mind right now in Suncorp Super Netball,” she said.
“We want to make sure players can enjoy themselves, it is hard being away from family.”
The SSN faced considerable disruption to its season with multiple relocations so far in 2021 – a stark contrast to Silver Ferns players in the ANZ Premiership.
Despite faring much better, the ANZP did face postponements of its own.
With just four games remaining in the SSN season, Coach Marinkovich – who will end her tenure with Fever when their season ends – said right now was about building a new era for the Diamonds.
“Our ball speed, athleticism, one on one hard work, and having a defensive unit that works as one,” she said would be a key focus. A squad that is “athletic and versatile” on the court.
She’s also very firm on the importance of building culture, and an understanding of what the Diamonds are about under her watch.
That begins with the captaincy.
“We’re going through the process now. Once SSN is finished, we’ll name the captain and leadership group,” she said.
An assistant coach is also forthcoming.
Along with their leaders, the squad will be narrowed down to a squad of 12 ahead of the upcoming fixture, with three training partners to assist in preparation.
